Coral Coast and Gascoyne region of Western Australia including Exmouth, Carnarvon, Monkey Mia and Geraldton

Back to Western Australia

Visit the Coral Coast and Gascoyne Coast of WAWest Coast of Western Australia including Exmouth, Carnarvon and Geraldton

The Coral Coast and Gascoyne region of Western Australia is an adventure and eco wonderland. Borderd from the north by the North West region, the Outback to the east, in the south Perth, and the Indian Ocean to the west, the West Coast region takes in some of the most famous attractions that Western Australia has to offer.

Starting in the north you have Exmouth. Exmouth serves as a gateway to Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Marine Park.

Then its down to Coral Bay, well known for its marine life, and as a great place to see whale sharks, humpback whales, dugongs, manta rays, turtles and an abundance of fish species. Visit Ningaloo Reef and see the the longest fringing reef in the world. It's less developed for tourism than the Great Barrier Reef, but it's much closer to the shore.

Denham is the main town in the Shark Bay World Heritage area, located on the western coast of the Peron Peninsula about eight hours' drive north of Perth. The high point of any visit to Shark Bay is sure to be the dolphins of Monkey Mia.

Nestled where the Murchison River flows into the Indian Ocean, two hours' drive north from Geraldton, is the ideally situated town of Kalbarri. This is one of Western Australia's most popular holiday resorts and is the premium place in the mid west for a total holiday experience.

Geraldton is an ideal base for self drive tours, especially during the famous wildflower season from July to November, and is within a few hours' drive of sealed roads to the real 'Outback'. Throughout the year there are scenic flights along the Batavia Coast to Monkey Mia (where wild dolphins visit), Kalbarri National Park and the spectacular Murchison River gorges. Tours to the Abrolhos Islands are also available by boat and float plane, offering fascinating views of these unique islands.

At just 275 kilometres north of Perth is located the coastal town of Jurien Bay. Jurien Bay is the largest town in the Dandaragan Shire and it has developed as a result of the growth of the rock lobster industry. In more recent times the town has become a popular holiday and recreation area because of its attractive coastline and seclusion.

Finally, at 245kn north of Perth on the way to Geraldton, visit the Nambung National Park. This park features beautiful beaches, coastal dune systems and low heathland rich in flowering plants. In the midst of this diversity is one of Australia's most fascinating areas – the Pinnacles Desert, one of Australia's best known landscapes. Here, thousands of huge limestone pillars rise from the shifting yellow sands, resembling a landscape from a science fiction movie. The park is a comfortable day trip from Perth.

There are excellent opportunties for camping and safaris and the fishing up around Carnarvon and Coral Bay is absolutely fantastic.
