This tropical sub-rainforest region is around 1,125 kilometres north of Brisbane, or 650 kilometres south of Cairns. The Cumberland and Northumberland Island groups, commonly called the Whitsunday Islands, form the largest offshore island chain on Australia's east coast and provide a magical holiday escape with something for everyone.

Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is a true Resort-town in its own right and is situated right on the coast, 24 kilometres from Proserpine. With the only marina on this part of the Queensland Coast and the multi-million dollar developments of hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and retail facilities, Airlie Beach is a thriving hub of activity.
All styles of accommodation from backpackers to bed and breakfasts, four and a half star hotels to serviced apartments, rise from the beach and into the lush green hills beyond, and the newly developed Airlie Beach Lagoon provides safe, clean, year-round swimming for all of Airlie's visitors and residents.
With all this development Airlie Beach has become a remarkably cosmopolitan place with a lively village atmosphere. During the day life revolves around the marina, the shopping and the lagoon, and at night the bars, restaurants and nightclubs come to life. Markets are held Saturday mornings along the Airlie Beach esplanade.
Airlie can be used as a hub to explore the magical Whitsundays with day trips that offer sailing, trips to the outer Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling and coral viewing, fishing, rainforest walks, visits to a wildlife park, a chance to explore uninhabited and resort islands, scenic flights and diving. Airlie Beach has something to cater for everyone.
Overnight crewed sailing trips through the islands, and the largest Bareboat Charter Fleet in the world also operate from here giving you the chance to skipper your own boat. National Parks and Wildlife Service covers 74 islands and 50,000 hectares on the mainland.
Shopping facilities in Airlie Beach are generally open seven days. Shopping is also available close by in Proserpine and Cannonvale, with Cannonvale offering trading throughout the working week as well as on weekends.
Midge Point
Heading out through Mackay and beyond the Hibiscus Coast lies the charming Midge Point area. Midge point is an ideal place to bushwalk, go fishing and crabbing and generally relax in a peaceful and tranquil area by the beach. Midge Point is home to various accommodation houses such as the Travellers Rest Cabin and Caravan Park set in 68 hectares of semi tropical rainforest, park is well shaded under the large tress, the beach is next to the back and offers hours of fishing, walks and fossicking. It's famous for it afternoon smoko and a fantastic place to escape the rat race.
A little further north of Midge Point is Laguna Whitsunday's Resort home to Queensland's Number one resort golf course. Set amongst almost 2,000 hectares of coastal bushland, Laguna Whitsunday's Resort is world class. This 150 room, five star resort offers a variety of deluxe rooms and suites and a choice of one, two or three bedroom villas.
