Visitors to the Townsville region will be unable to forget the beautifully warm days, with the sun shining brightly on the calm blue sea. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, visitors can truly enjoy the stunning natural beauty, rich history and fabulous man-made attractions that await them in this region. Couples, families and people of all ages will enjoy the many activities and attractions of the North, whether they are seeking peaceful relaxation or something more adventurous.
The region extends from Townsville south to Bowen and north to Mission Beach. Townsville is the centre of the North Queensland region and from here you can travel west to the old gold towns of Charters Towers and Ravenswood, or north to Tully for whitewater rafting. Magnetic Island is just 20 minutes from Townsville by ferry, crossing calm Cleveland Bay. Other islands in the North Queensland region include Orpheus, Bedarra, Dunk and Hinchinbrook Islands. Each island offers a different style of accommodation, from rustic to romantic. Activities vary and include breathtaking nature walks, a wide range of watersports or just simply relaxing on your own stretch of beach under a palm tree.
Clothing: Casual lightweight clothing is suitable for the North Queensland climate. A swimsuit, hat and sunscreen are essential as the region is blessed with beautiful warm, sunny weather year round. Warmer clothes may be required during the winter evenings.
Beach Safety: Safe beach swimming is available year round. Marine stinger enclosures are in operation November to March. The Townsville Strand, Picnic and Arcadia Bays on Magnetic Island are patrolled by Surf Life Saving Clubs all year. Things to See and Do ...
Talk to the Animals: North Queensland has a wonderful collection of unusual insects, birds and animals. Billabong Sanctuary just south of Townsville and Koala Park Oasis on Magnetic Island, have animals roaming in their natural environment. Townsville Town Common National Park is a premier birdwatching location, and Butterfly World and the Ayr Nature Display have excellent displays.
Heritage and Culture: The Townsville region has a colourful history shaped by Aboriginal tribes, miners, pastoralists and war. Remnants of these bygone times are still evident in the beautiful colonial architecture, historic pubs, museums and displays of old gold mining machinery and cottages. The region is also well known for the amazing range of museums, theatre, dance and arts and crafts.
Adventure: Action seekers will have their appetites well fed. Choose to parasail, horseride or abseil. Pick the adrenalin rush of white water rafting, or the thrill of a winning bet at the casino. Enjoy spectacular views of glistening ocean and mountains on the back of a legendary Harley Davidson on Magnetic Island and Townsville.
