Visit the Murray and Riverina NSW
The Murray River flows from the Snowy Mountains in the north east to Encounter Bay in South Australia and is Australia's most important inland waterway. The Murray forms much of the border between New South Wales and Victoria. The Murray region of New South Wales includes the major towns of Echuca, Albury-Wodonga (on the NSW/Victorian border), and Deniliquen. From Echuca-Moama you can travel the Murray on a traditional paddle steamer or take a cruise. A popular way of exploring the Murray is to hire your own houseboat and there are a number of houseboat hire companies set up for this.
Albury-Wodonga is an ideal base for a variety of activities including skiing (in winter), canoeing, white-water rafting, fishing, water skiing and bushwalking. There are also wineries, gold mining towns and along the river are many historic towns.
Deniliquin, situated on the Edward River, a branch of the Murray River has an unusual series of lagoons snakeing off into parkland and state forest. Its situation makes it ideal for fishing, waterskiing, canoeing, boating, safe swimming, river cruises, and relaxing on both sandy McLeans Beach and Willoughby's Beach within the state forest.
The Riverina region is located in southern New South Wales and encompasses the middle and lower reaches of the Murrumbidgee River Valley. The Riverina offers some of the nation's best food and wine, and its fertile farmland has attracted migrants from many nations, creating a surprising and eclectic mix of cuisines and cultures. This is a region of classic country towns with large old pubs and the flourishing cities of Wagga Wagga and Griffith.
There are national parks to explore, unique wildlife, heritage buildings, festivals, art galleries, historic trains at the Roundhouse Rail Museum in Junee. Explore the walking trails, botanical gardens, agricultural shows, rivers and ancient aboriginal culture. You can fossick for gold or semi-precious stones; go fruit-picking with your backpack; or study the fauna and flora on a bushwalk.
Other activities include horse-riding, ballooning, fishing, boating, sky-diving and indoor climbing at Wagga Wagga. The town of Tumut provides easy access to Kosciusko National Park and Yarrangobilly Caves.
The region is bound together by a network of proud country towns with wide streets and grand old pubs. Heritage buildings and pioneering reminders can be found in every township of the Riverina. But the Riverina is not just about good food and fine wine, it is about experiencing Australia's unique connection to the land. There are many bush walking trails and scenic tours drives through the region. You can visit the Temora Aviation Museum and watch a genuine Spit Fire in action and there's great fishing on the Murrumbidgee River while you cruise down to Hay.
