Everest 2006 Highlights

mt_everest.jpgThe 2006 Everest climbing season ending much has been made about the tragedies that have occured this year but perhaps now is a good time to recap on the successes for this year. More than 200 climbers reached the summit this year. Australian Robert Killup and New Zealander Mark Inglis where among the successful climbers to achieve this. Mark Inglis achieving his success on two artificial carbon fibre legs, breaking one at 7,000 metres. He became the first double-amputee to summit Mt Everest.

XPD Expedition Race Update

XPD_ed2.jpgMEDIA RELEASE: Expedition to a Wonder of the Natural World. In a much anticipated announcement, Geocentric Adventure Racing has released plans to hold the third edition of the XPD Expedition Race on the Whitsunday Coast, Australia. Race Director Craig Bycroft said “Competitors will travel through reef, rainforest and outback in this diverse expedition race. They will experience the majestic Whitsunday Islands, lush highland rainforests and the harsh Queensland outback.” Dates have been set for next year, the 20-31 August 2007.

NZ disabled climber Mark Inglis upset over Everest criticism

New Zealand mountaineer Mark Inglis, who last month became the first double amputee to climb Mount Everest, believes he was wrongly condemned for leaving another climber to die on the mountain. The other climber, Englishman David Sharp, apparently reached the summit but died after getting into difficulty on the way down. It was reported that several parties, including that of Inglis, passed him.

Hopes fade for Australian climber Sue Fears

Sad news… The family of Australian climber Sue Fear have given up hope that she survived a fall into a mountain crevasse on Nepal’s Mount Manaslu and mountain experts have decided not to send out a search party to recover her body.

Top Australian climber Sue Fear feared dead on Mountain

Tragedy has again struck the Australian climbing fraternity with top female climber Sue Fear plummeting to her death in the Himalayas.

The 43-year-old was climbing down Nepal’s 8156 metre Mount Manaslu – the world’s eighth highest peak – when she, along with Nepali Bishnu Gurung, fell into a crevasse.

Revived Aussie Lincoln Hall reaches Everest base camp

Australian mountaineer Lincoln Hall, from the NSW Blue Mountains, is exhausted and suffering pneumonia, but has safely reached Mt Everest base camp, a friend says.

The 50-year-old Hall was also suffering from frostbite but was in good spirits.

The Desert Mums cross the Simpson Desert on foot

Susan Bartell (44), Margot Burns (43), Carolyn McLean (42) and Debbie Shiell (36) have completed a 430 km, 1,100 sand-dune walk across the Simpson Desert. Their purpose was to raise funds for breast cancer research. Their 18 day trek finished with their final steps into a Bridsville Hotel to order a cold beer. The women said they were both elated and exhausted!

Aussie teenager climber ends Everest quest

News Flash: Australian teenager Christopher Harris and his team has had to turn back from their goal of reaching the summit of Mt Everest due to a respiratory problem that Christopher has suffered. The team is now on their way back down to base camp. On medical advice, they will not be trying for another summit attempt.
