They’ve done it! Kayakers cross the ditch

done_dusted.jpgThey have done it! James Castrission, 25, and Justin Jones, 24, have cross the Tasman Sea and reached New Plymouth on NZ’s West Coast at 12:20 local time (10:20 AEDT).

In doing so they are the first to kayak across the Tasman Sea. They have also just completed the longest trans-oceanic expedition ever attempted in a double kayak with two expeditioners. This is also the second longest trans- oceanic expedition relying solely on paddle power for propulsion and the fourth longest open water paddle attempted in a kayak.

Lot 41 expected to land tomorrow

Sydneysiders James Castrission, 25, and Justin Jones, 24 two Australian kayakers who have been paddling across the Tasman made up time last night and are expected to arrive in New Zealand tomorrow. The is great news for two guys who have given their all to their dreams of crossing the ditch from Foster on the New South Wales north coast to New Plymouth New Zealand.

Sir Edmund Hillary dies

Sir Edmund HillarySir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb the world’s highest mountain Mount Everest, died early this morning at the age of 88, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said.

Hillary, who with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of the 8,848-metre Himalayan mountain on May 29 1953, had been in increasingly frail health in recent years.

Kayakers Struggle with Illness

With just 10 days to go and paddling for up to 12 hours a day for the last 56 days, James Castrission and Justin Jones are now really doing it tough. Both young adventurers are really feeling the effects of fatigue and illness as they kayak from Australia to New Zealand.

Papua New Guinea By Sea-kayak… a World First Expedition

95.jpgMEDIA RELEASE: Tasmanian teacher and adventurer Andrew Hughes has today announced a 4,000 kilometre sea-kayak expedition around Papua New Guinea. Beginning by paddling over 800 kilometres down the remote Fly River, Hughes will continue to the capital Port Moresby and Milne Bay before embarking on long stretches of isolation to the northern border with Irian Jaya. The journey, beamed live on the internet through www.expeditionclass.com, is expected to take six months, starting in May next year.
