Keen Adventure Race, Great Ocean Road – Entries Open !!!

March 13, 2007toMarch 17, 2007

The inaugural Keen Adventure Race on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, will be held from 13-17 March, 2007. The course traverses the length of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria’s South West, starting at Bay Of Islands and finishing at Torquay.

Despite the proximity to one of the most celebrated scenic drives in Australia, the organisers reassure us that we won’t actually see much of the road itself – or any roads for that matter.

Be prepared for an extremely challenging, but ultimately very rewarding expedition length adventure race of over 400km in length.

Course description

The course itself is mixed. There are 3 stages & a prologue over the 5 days:

Prologue: Tuesday evening, 13th March, Port Campbell. While the short ’sprint’ session of around an hour won’t separate the field too much, it will determine the seedings for the Stage One launch the next day. Be prepared for some unusual challenges.

Stage 1: First light Wednesday, 14th March, The Wild Southern Section of the Great Ocean Road. This stage involves 2 paddle legs, a ripping MTB leg, a couple of runs with navigation forming part of most legs. Fastest teams can be expected to complete this stage in daylight, the rest will need to pack their lights in order to beat the cut-off - the start of the next stage !!

Stage 2: 8:00am Thursday, 15th March, Apollo Bay to Airey’s Inlet. The queen stage of the race, involving all the traditional elements of adventure racing - a fair bit of navigation, racing right through the night, a bit of climbing and ropes work (no prior experience necessary, but recommended) plus all the traditional elements that go towards making a momentous 24-48 hour stage, depending on how fast you go. The cut-off is, you guessed it, the start of the next stage

Stage 3: 8:00am Saturday, 17th March, Anglesea region to Torquay. Jacoby’s backyard. Expect to be punished. The fastest teams will finish this ’short’ stage in around 6-7 hours, the slowest more likely double that (make sure your torch batteries are recharged). This stage is more akin to the first stage and involves paddle, a mountain bike and a run. Bring your compass and your wits to make it to the ultimate finish line.

Due to the nature of the race (i.e. the inclusion of navigational components), no more details will be offered until maps are handed out to competitors on the Wednesday morning of the race !!!

Date: March 13th-17th 2007
Prize Pool: $60,000
