Big crowds expected for Avon Descent
The Multiplex Avon Descent, Western Australia’s famous boat race down the Avon River, is expected to be bigger than ever this year, with the introduction of a corporate entry category for competitors.
“Competitors in this gruelling event will take on an amazing 33km stretch of grade three rapids and flat-water pools,” Ms McHale (WA Tourism Minister) said.
“The Multiplex Avon Descent is a great opportunity to develop your sporting skills while tackling WA’s spectacular Avon River.
“As the State’s biggest spectator event, the Avon Descent is exciting for both the competitors and their supporters who cheer from the riverbanks.”
The event organisers, the Northam Avon Descent Association, were this year broadening involvement by encouraging teams from local companies to enter as part of the new Kwik Kopy Corporate Challenge. Corporate entrants could compete in teams of four for a fee of $800.
The course stretches from Northam to Bayswater via the Avon and Swan Valleys. Entrants can race in a powerboat or canoe, either singly, in pairs or in teams of four.
This year’s prize winnings are bigger than ever, with $136,320 in prizes promised to the event’s winners. Safety will be the top priority, with trained members of the Avon Support Unit on hand to assist at all times.
