Bumper winter season predicted for Victoria’s ski fields

April 15th, 2006

A some what early start to the snow season in Victoria after Easter holiday-makers at Mt Buller awoke to a blanket of snow today.

A bumper winter season was predicted for Victoria’s ski fields… Buller Ski Lifts general manager Laurie Blampied said 10cm of snow had covered the resort six weeks before the official start of the ski season, and it was still falling. “It’s great to be able to provide our guests with snow for Easter,” Mr Blampied said.

He said the dump was consistent with the weather bureau’s forecast of above average snowfalls this winter. “Early April snowfalls allow the ground to freeze and form a good base for future snowfalls between now and June,” he said.

Woman rescued after canyoning misshap in the Blue Mountains

April 15th, 2006

A 31-year-old woman with a broken leg and suffering from hypothermia has been winched out of Claustral Canyon, near Mount Tomah in the Blue Mountains. Part of a group of 11 people, the woman was canyoning in difficult terrain when she fractured her lower right leg and dislocated her ankle.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital and the other members of the group were also been winched out. Because of the rough terrain and fading light yesterday afternoon the crew of the rescue helicopter had to call off an operation to airlift the woman out of Claustral Canyon. Instead at first light this morning, the injured woman and her group were moved to a more suitable site to facilitate the airlift operation. This began at first light.

Light winds for the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race

April 14th, 2006

Light unstable winds will force the 48 skippers of the 58th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race to rethink their race strategy when they line up for the start of the 58th Brisbane to Gladstone race today.

Even with the high standard of yachts competing in this years race, they will be struggeling to beat the 2004 race record of 10 hours of her 20 hour 24 minute 50 seconds. This record was set by Victorian super maxi “Skandia” when she recorded an impressive 15.09 knot average for the 308 n/mile course.

Giant Catfish Caught in Thailand

April 11th, 2006

Nearly 2.7 meters long, a huge catfish was caught in northern Thailand. It may be the largest freshwater fish ever recorded. I came across this article in the National Geographic website and its worth reading.

Caught last May (05) in the Mekong River, a team of fishermen struggled for more than an hour to haul the creature in. It tipped the scales at 293 kilograms.

Zeb Hogan, a National Geographic Society emerging explorer and a WWF conservation science fellow said “It’s amazing to think that giants like this still swim in some of the world’s rivers.” The giant catfish is currently the focus of a World Wildlife Fund and National Geographic Society project to identify and study the planet’s biggest freshwater fish.
