| NO ABSEILING: For those wanting to try canyoning without
the abseiling component then this Rocky Creek Canyoning day is ideal. We through
two magnificent canyons rolled into one great trip. Delightful and mysterious,
the Sheep Dip/Rocky Creek combination is a perfect beginners canyon trip.
There is no abseiling or liloing, but heaps of fun – fantastic waterjumps up to 5 metres, waterslides, swims up to 50 metres in length and even an optional duckunder for the adventurous. This is definitely one of the best beginners canyons in the World Heritage region.
A scenic one hour drive from Katoomba leads to the start of the canyon in the
remote Wollemi National Park. Along the way we often see lots of kangaroos,
wallabies, black cockatoos and other wildlife. A short, easy walk leads to Sheep
Dip, a narrow, twisting chasm with a chain of pretty pools and small waterfalls.
The adrenalin pumping jumps and slides make this a real fun experience.
After the high rolling action of Sheep Dip, a pleasant 30 minute trek through lush open forest brings us to the majestic Rocky Creek Canyon. A delicious picnic lunch is enjoyed at the water's edge before venturing into Rocky's enclosed subterranean world. Much deeper and darker than Sheep Dip, Rocky has a sublime awe-inspiring atmosphere.
An exciting 4 metre climbing chute, followed by several short, dark swims,
sets the agenda for a spectacular canyon. After a superb waterslide the canyon
widens. From here to the end of the canyon we continue at a more tranquil pace
- walking, wading and swimming, taking in the fantastic rock formations. After
a brief rest, we reverse the canyon for double the fun.
The 45 minute walk out is fairly gradual (only the last 5 minutes is steep),
passing through a forest of Treeferns and Coachwoods.
