The 2012 Serra Terror will start from a point north of Dunkeld at Jimmy’s Creek, the adventurers will take a planned route, over crests, though historical ruins, pass near an acclaimed vineyard, and check in at scheduled checkpoints, where a cosy fire and home made tasty treats await. And all this will be incorporated in the first half of the course! This first stage will be a ½ Marathon!
The second stage of the event : A self navigation exercise through the land of Gariwerd – Grampians, discovering Serra Secrets and collecting tokens of value to gain points. But at the same time, those non-competitive participants will still have the brilliant outdoor vistas of the Serra Range to enjoy, photograph and experience.
Major Prizes such as ‘The Fastest Team Award, ‘Fundraising Award’, the ‘Judges’ Choice Award’, given to a team who captures the spirit of the weekend. There will be opportunities for other prizes to be awarded.
Where does the fundraising go?
New Dunkeld Community Centre
The cause will always be for the promotion of Dunkeld and the benefit to the community at large with support for a new Community Hall. The current hall in Dunkeld is falling apart and is no longer in a state to be widely used by the community and a plan was developed to build a multi function centre.
Supporting wildlife cause the Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby
At the point of extinction, the Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby, is back from the brink, due to a captive breeding program successfully releasing some back into small pockets of the Grampians National Park. 10% of the entry fees / fundraising paid by each team will be donated to this very worthwhile program.
The major conservation objectives of the Victorian Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby Recovery Program are to secure and expand the existing colonies and re-establish the species at suitable sites in Victoria including the Grampians National Park.
Who is Dunkeld Adventure?
Dunkeld Adventure is the organisation under which outdoor experiences are created in the Southern Grampians. www.dunkeldadventure.com
The concept of an annual Dunkeld Adventure now incorporates a vision for Dunkeld to become known as the place to be for outdoor adventure type experiences. Dunkeld Adventure, the umbrella body, will organise and develop these events, to be set against the backdrop of the Southern Grampians and the natural environment surrounding our town. The endurance hike, the Serra Terror, is the first in many such events. Cycling, rallies, horse riding trails etc are just some of the ideas for the future.
